Barbados Poetry
Barbados has cultivated a number of outstanding and talented writers, playwrights and poets.
Some of our poets and writers such as Adisa (Aja) Andwele, Edward Kamau Brathwaite and George Lamming are internationally known.
Books on Barbadian Poetry are available at leading bookstores and at The Barbados Museum and Historical Society.
Deighton Alleyne, a 45 year old Barbadian, is a former policeman who resigned in 1993 to live in St. Vincent for 3 years. As a former drainage division supervisor who has been writing poems since he was a kid, Deighton also volunteers as an announcer for a St. Vincent radio station, reads the news and conducts a morning program twice a week.
In wanting to spread some positive inspiration he submitted the following poem for publication on Totally Barbados.

Island Treasure – Barbados!
Beautiful Barbados, our tropical paradise
With grilled fish in Oistins, the food is nice
A Caribbean gem the place for leisure
See Harrisons Cave our national treasure.
Enjoy our white sands, our sea and sun
Pure Bajan hospitality for everyone
Barbados is the place to go
When you want to get away from the snow.
Its the island of culture and flying fish
Stand on any boardwalk and make a wish
As you gaze into the ocean blue
And feel the cool breeze flowing back at you.
Visit the rum factory at Foursquare
Find a village shop, grab a Banks beer
A scenic drive you will love the most
When you cruise the south, east or west coast.
If you are religious and want to worship
You will find a church in every district
Bajan energy is so profound
Whether at the Gold cup or at Kensington ground.
Kadooment Day is a real big hit
Pure Bajan culture will rock your ship!
Crop Over time will leave you spell-bound
Lots of action for you to get around.
Bad experiences are far and few
Tourist life is great, we cater just for you
Your visit to Bim you will not regret
Beautiful Barbados you will never forget.
