Holders Season 2008

Holders Season runs for 2 weeks from the 23rd of February until the 15th of March 2008, providing Barbados with a premier event of performing arts.

The grounds of Holders House are transformed to create a delightful outdoor theatre in the grounds of this historic 17th century plantation house. Artists from all over the world come to perform at this prestigious event.

The event opens with ‘Sounds of Africa‘ accompanied by the renowned Congo/Cuban guitar duo Papa Noel and Adan Pedroso.

You can also hear the masters of the keyboard, Ben Walters and the David Rees Williams Trio. For another musical treat you may like to go and hear the operatic tenor and baritone of singers Phillip Sheffield and Quentin Hayes.

On another evening you can hear and witness The Piano 2 – Classical Night Four Hands-One Piano featuring Jean-Fabien Schneider and Irina Krasnyanskaya who are graduates of the Paris and Moscow Conservatories of Music, they will play piano duets featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Bernstein and Brahms‘.

There is also an evening of Gospel and Blues performed by The Campbell Brothers from New York. For the gala night you can enjoy the Three Mo’ Tenors as they hit the high C’s!

From London, UK there are performances from The Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre who are performing Much Ado About Nothing. Then there is an evening of poetry performed by British actor Simon Williams, with contributions from Edward Lear, P J O’Rourke, George Bernard Shaw, and P G Wodehouse.

Kit and The Widow also return with their comedy act; they are a regular visitor to the Holders stage. For the comedy night Holder’s are delighted to announce a performance from Chicago’s 2nd City Touring Company.

There is an evening dedicated to the children with the percussion duo Drum Blondes, followed by a brilliant session of improvised story telling and comic theatre by Chicago’s 2nd City Touring Company.

The setting for Holders provides a wonderful atmosphere with the polo field to your left, and with such pretty lighting you can’t help but have a pleasant evening before the performance has even begun. There is a champagne tent for you to sip some bubbly, enjoy the warm evening breeze and soak up the ambience of your surroundings.

Sounds of Africa N’Faly Kouyate + Adan Pedroso and Papa Noel. The Holders grounds will once again echo to the authentic sounds of Africa. Master Kora player, Senegalese N’Faly Kouyate together with his band, is one of the world’s top names. His sounds are preceeded by the Congo/Cuban guitar duo Papa Noel and Adan Pedroso.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London – Much Ado About Nothing. Shakespeare’s romantic comedy focuses on the love story between the young lovers Claudio and Hero and the battle of the sexes between Beatrice and Benedick. Jo Howarth who comes from London’s remarkable re-creation of Shakespeare’s original theatre, The Globe, puts the production together.

The Piano – Keyboard Kings Ben Waters + The David Rees Williams Trio – Two masters of the keyboard, Ben Waters, and David Rees Williams, the new Jacques Loussier – jazz interpretations of great classical masterpieces. Their backing musicians support both.

Classical Double Mill Bravo! & The Montreal Guitar Trio
The Montreal Guitar Trio performs a programme of arrangements ranging from the tango to top film scores. This will be followed by a glimpse at the world of opera. Scripted by Charles Hart – the lyricist of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera – Bravo! presents the world and music of the operatic tenor and baritone – featuring singers Phillip Sheffield and Quentin Hayes.

Comedy Night 2nd City Touring Co. Chicago
Chicago’s 2nd City Touring Company is justifiably described as ‘the world’s greatest comedy theatre company’ and has generated comedy giants including Alan Arkin, Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray. The latest crop of comic talents brings their remarkable brand of humour to the magical garden.

Calling All Kids
Two hours of entertainment provided by the superb percussion duo Drum Blondes. Their participatory music making experience, will be followed by a brilliant session of improvised story telling and comic theatre by Chicago’s 2nd City Touring Company. All in the presence of entertainers Stickleback Plasticus.

Poetry on the Gallery – Love is all around
Leading British actor Simon Williams and friends presents an evening of words music, wit and wisdom about the great universal subject that is love. Passionate love, pure love, cynical love, unrequited love, all sorts of love. With contributions from Edward Lear, P J O’Rourke, George Bernard Shaw, P G Wodehouse and many others.

Tuesday 11th March 2008
The Piano 2 – Classical Night Four Hands-One Piano featuring Jean-Fabien Schneider and Irina Krasnyanskaya – Graduates of the Paris and Moscow Conservatories of Music, the Franco/Russian combination of Jean-Fabien Schneider and Irina Krasnyanskaya brings a programme of piano duets featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Bernstein and Brahms’ effervescent Hungarian Dances. The programme will also feature a guest appearance by dynamic percussion duo, The Drum Blondes.

Gospel and Blues Night with The Campbell Brothers
New York based Campbell Brothers perform a mixture of funk, jazz and soul inspired gospel music featuring the growling, wailing, shouting, singing and swinging voice of the steel guitar, played as you have never heard it played before.

Gala Night – Direct from Broadway featuring The Three Mo’ Tenors
Not just the final night of the Holders Season – but one of the major events in the Barbados calendar. A major hit on Broadway, the Three Mo’ Tenors hit the high C’s, belt out Broadway hit tunes, sass the jazz, stir the soul, and life spirituals right off the ground. An energy packed evening featuring three astonishingly versatile and accomplished singers. Look out for the remarkable Judge the Poet during the traditional supper interval as well as Holders’ trademark strolling entertainers.
