Holetown Festival 2014
In February 1627, somewhere between the 17th and 20th February, eighty (80) English settlers and ten (10) African slaves sailed to the island of Barbados on a ship named “The William and John.”
The settlers landed and claimed the island as an English colony – they named the place they came ashore “Jamestown” after the reigning King James of England. Later the name was changed from Jamestown to Holetown.
Three hundred and fifty years later a group of people which included Alfred Pragnell, Keith Simmons and the Trents Northern Youth Group planned the first commemorative festival in 1977.
They planned it for the weekend closest to the original landing date. It has now become a yearly festival which hosts a week of festivities running from Sunday to Sunday.
