Rugby in Barbados
Barbados has seen the game of rugby played since the 1900’s, initially by the British Forces, and their families that were stationed here in Barbados.
The game of rugby continued to be played in Barbados during the 1940’s and 1950’s until the formation of the Barbados Rugby Football Union in 1964.
It was at this point that members erected a clubhouse at the Garrison Savannah, which has become the home of Rugby Barbados.
But what makes Barbados and Rugby Barbados even more special, and the reason so many visitors return to these shores year after year is the people and players. Barbadians, called Bajans, are warm, friendly and always ready to make you feel welcome and unique in this Caribbean Island.
We pride ourselves on our hosting of touring sides at the Garrison Savannah with plenty of refreshments and the traditional exchanging of rugby stories and songs under the starlit Caribbean Skies. In 1995, Rugby Barbados was prosperous in becoming a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB).
Over the years we have played host to some famous clubs including Bath RFC, Kilkenny RFC, and Muscat RFC, to name but a few, and had the privilege to play with or against some of the worlds greatest rugby players. Gareth Edwards, Willie Duggan, Mike Cat, Jeremy Guscott and Victor Ubogu have all graced the Garrison Savannah.
The Barbados RFU has three senior-level sides in Barbados, Scorpions RFC, Renegades RFC and the Barbados Defence Force RFC that participate in interclub games.
We also have an Over 35’s (veterans) side and a youth squad ranging in age from U14 to U19.
So come to Barbados, play rugby and enjoy this emerald isle of the Caribbean.
