Apostle All The Way At The Garrison
Apostle’s rivals were left trailing in his wake in the Banks Barbados Guineas at the Garrison Savannah on Easter Monday, 9th April, 2007. The Elias Haloute and Sir Charles Williams-owned gelding was given a superb ride by Anderson Trotman and was never headed at any point during the race.
The three-year-old, who is improving with each race he runs, was taken on in the straight by Charlie Blue but always looked like prevailing. Hawayan Tropic, who does not know how to run a bad race, finished third.
The Guineas is the first leg of the Triple Crown and the Andrew Nunes-trained Apostle will now bid to follow in the footsteps of Zouk, last year’s ‘Horse of the Year’, who captured the three classics in 2006 and won the bonus of $100,000 that is also up for grabs this year.
Punters who made Apostle the hot favourite for the Guineas, had to wait to draw their money while a stewards’ enquiry took place and an objection by Charlie Blue’s rider, Anderson Ward, to the winner, was considered. But Apostle was allowed to keep the race and is clearly a horse with a big future.
Second favourite Kate O’Connor, under Patrick Husbands, disappointed yet again, trailing in a distant fifth. This was the second successive flop by the filly and her connections must be scratching their heads because the dazzling form she displayed in previous races had marked her down as a potential superstar.
The day’s principal supporting race, the Banks Beer Trophy Handicap, provided owners, the Aysha Syndicate, and trainer Liz Deane with another big race one-two. Liz, who had saddled Whiskey For Me to beat Who’s Wavering in last month’s Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, was full of smiles as, on this occasion, she led Who’s Wavering into the winners’ spot.
Who’s Wavering was given a peach of a ride by Trotman and passed the post a length in front of his stable companion Duc D Fer. The evergreen Kabul finished third. Rocco Bowen rode two winners on the card and another apprentice, Lorraine Lalung, from Martinique, broke her Garrison duck on Trinity.
The enigmatic Zidane finally put his head in front in the opening race and Aquarius Star’s victory in the Twist Trophy came as no surprise to her connections. Owners Mervyn Rollins and Victor Cheeseman had been expecting a big run from this magnificent filly, who is also trained by Victor.
